SailTime Channel Islands Sailing Newsletter - August 2008
Ahoy Mateys!
It's hard to believe it is already August but July swept by like a perfect wake with day after day of ideal sailing conditions. It's been downright tropical here in old Oxnard with warm temps and winds certainly lighter than what we expect. In August, new sailors will want to get on the water early and return home early to miss the afternoon flow. The general rule for late Summer around here is that from 11am to 2pm the wind will blow 10-15 knots inside of Gina and from 2pm on it can pipe up to 20 knots. It is fairly normal to find 15-25 knots on the other side of Gina in the afternoons. This all usually leads to high sundown winds as the sea breeze races off to the desert.
August kicks off with a bang, when the McNish Classic yacht race occurs on Saturday, August 2nd. It's a great day to load up the boats and head out to watch classic yachts out in front of the harbor. We also welcome August with our first ever overnight flotilla to Santa Cruz island on August 9 and 10. All of the 36's and Sancerre are scheduled to participate when we head to Yellow Banks or Scorpion anchorage depending on the conditions. This second weekend of August is also the Tall Ships Festival at Channel Islands Harbor when up to 8 Tall Ships racing from San Francisco arrive on August 7 and exhibit through the 10th.

NOTICES
Please Welcome New Members to SailTime Channel Islands!
Steven Van Hook on Imagine is looking to gain more skills and meet other members
Randy Bush on Imagine enjoys sailing as a respite from a hectic work schedule
Steve and Therese Rice and Family on Varekai are all looking forward to becoming sailors
Maintenance continues on schedule this Summer - Imagine and Varekai got their seasonal major engine tune ups and Imagine had her jib restitched. All boats are getting their late summer wax jobs.
Slow Down!
We have seen all of the boats under various command motoring with too much speed in the main fairway. Please keep it under 5 knots in the harbor and if there is a lot of traffic cut it down a bit more so you can evade another craft if necessary.
Cancel Your Unused Reservations
Please respect the other members on your boat. If you change your plans and decide to not use your reservation please cancel it as soon as possible so that another member may use the boat!
Mainsail Furling Notes
It seems like we are seeing less jamming of the main sails by switching the furling winch to ratchet when the sail is rolled up. Lets keep it up. VANG USE - It is also important to make sure the boom vang lines are loose when rolling the main in or out. This allows the boom to align with the furler more smoothly. CONVERSELY - it is very important that you secure the vang - tighten it down - once the sail is deployed. If you dont the entire top of the sail twists under load and you do not get good performance out of the sail. Additionally it wears against the top spreader which is a no-no.
If you are not clear on these new procedures ask Capt Dan or Chris to go over it with you.
October Catalina Trip
If you noticed in the calendar, the second annual SailTime Rendezvous at Catalina is planned for Oct 9-12. It is a long slog from here to there but if you want to make the trip you first need to reserve your boat and put together a crew. Contact Chris to let us know you want to participate and we will start to make a plan. Members from Marina Del Rey, Newport Beach and San Diego plan to sail over and attend.
Annual Party
This is the final month to vote for having our annual party during the holidays or at another time of year. We have only heard from about 1/3 of the members, so please vote today! Results will be in the September issue.

CAPTAIN DAN'S CORNER
Avast!
I sailed almost every day in July and hope you got out to enjoy the incredible conditions. The month was spent with quite a few of you getting through your certifications. In between, we had charters and island trips sprinkled in to keep me on my toes ! Congrats to Richard and Dean on 1421 for a most excellent ASA 104 experience. My August calendar is every bit as much full, being the most popular month for charters and lessons.
Im pretty darn excited about our flotilla to Santa Cruz very shortly. We've got Sancerre all ready to lead the way and I look forward to welcoming you on to her for a sundown refreshment !
Im still looking for my first 106 victim. Be the first on your block with a sticker on that page of your ASA book. Impress your friends and neighbors ! Contact me to get the details.
It wont be long now before we get back into Clinic Season. This Fall and Winter we plan to offer the usual Anacapa and Ventura clinics as well as our Safety At Sea refreshers and Heavy Weather experiences. If you have an idea for a clinic let me know and we'll get it on the calendar. Look for a clinic schedule for the season in September.
