1421 Nabs Frolic Cup Back at Oxnard Sailing Classic

Published by sailtimeci at 3:58 pm under SailTime

“1421″, a 2008 Hunter 36, Captained by John McKinney, won the coveted Full Moon Frolic Cup back last night by beating “Bodacious” and April winner, “Varekai” in a good evening breeze that began to die on the homeward leg. Varekai won the cup in April. May saw a contest that was called off due to lack of wind and June found 1/2 the sailors in the Abacos enjoying a cruising vacation. So, this was a highly anticipated competition.

Here we see, “Dock Commodore” and event organizer, Dwight Landis, presenting the perpetual “Blue Cup” and coveted “Red Cup” to July’s winner, John McKinney. It was a warm night on the docks which featured an incredible array of surf n turf shishkabobs, salads, finger foods and way too many desert choices. For many members, this is the social highlight of the month!

Good job Chris. I think you really captured the essence of the FMF with your picture and your write up. John and his son were determined to recapture the “cup” and they ran a great race. But Varekai was not about to give up. She was gaining on 1421 near the finish and John admitted that he was starting to get a little nervious towards the end. Captain Jim on Bodacious, known for his surprizing last leg burst of speed, made a tactical error rounding Gina and could not keep up with the pack (I am not sure that the sea lions on Gina’s mooring buoy feel it’s safe to return).

But the fun race is only half of the event. Sailing makes everyone hungry, and participants contributed to great appitezers including spinach dip, backed brie, fruit and (your right) a variety of desserts including mini eclairs, cookies, pineapple upsidedown cake, and brownies.

If you like sailing, good company, and good food, then the FMF can’t be beat!

    The Commodore
