1421 Takes SailTime Cup at Ensenada for 2nd Straight Year

Published by sailtimeci at 12:50 am under SailTime

Showing that last year was no fluke, “1421″, a 2008 Hunter 36, Captained by Owner SK Leong and a crew of five others successfully defended their 2008 win over the SailTime fleet at the fabled Newport to Ensenada race. 1421 finished the race in a corrected time of 20:42:33 which was a minute shy of three hours faster than the second place finisher, Shared Blessing, a Hunter 38, from the Newport Beach SailTime fleet, Captained by Loren Olson. In actual time, 1421 was just 4 minutes and 4 seconds faster than the bigger boat.

The crew of 1421 showed no signs of mutiny during the race because Caterer Extraordinaire Bobby Weisman kept their bellies full!

In other Ensenada Race news, the all-time monohull record was broken by Magnitude 80 by a little over 7 minutes. This years race featured good winds throughout the 125 mile course and a substantially smaller fleet. There were 270 boats entered into this years race, while last year saw 380 boats. The reduced number of entrants is blamed on recent violence in Mexico. In fact, a new race was born this year that left Newport one hour before the age old downwind contest that ended in San Diego. The new Border Run race attracted 112 boats. This years overall Newport to Ensenada Race Winner was a 20 year old Catalina 30 which handicapped over 5 minutes a mile to Mag80!

Congratulations! SK and crew. Good job representing the Sailtime Channel Islands Fleet and recapturing your title. By the way … the new sails are awesome! Everyone looks well fed in the photo … Bobby. Job well done! Mike & Deana Ruel
