FMF Cup Passes Hands in Latest Round of Sailing Action

Published by at 12:07 am under SailTime

Last night, the Full Moon Frolic saw a closely contested sailing race out to the Wes Mark from the Channel Islands Harbor entrance. By just a few boat lengths, Varekai, Captained by Owner Mick Rotondo,  took the coveted Red Cup away from 1421, Captained by Member of the Year 2007, John McKinney. The 1421 crew had held the cup for several matches that saw Varekai or Bodacious trading 2nd and 3rd. Jerry Roth, Owner of Rainbow, a Hunter 33 and Tactician aboard Varekai said he applied the common sailboat racing tactics he has used on the same course perhaps over 200 times on the Wet Wednesday Racing Series over the past 25 years to edge out 1421.

Bodacious co-captain, Member Larry Pruitt snapped this picture at the dockside awards ceremony when Dock Commodore and 2008 Member of the Year, Dwight Landis, presented Mick Rotonodo with the coveted Red Cup and an inscribed position on the perpetual Blue Trophy. This is Varekai’s second trip to the podium. Member Bobby Weisman, our own Hollywood caterer, captained the yacht to a first place finish in that first running of the FMF back last Summer.

Next Up, May 9th when it actually will be a full moon!
