Harbor Dredging Season

Published by at 4:40 pm under Random Thawt

The Channel Islands Harbor is set to be dredged beginning Monday, December 6th. Not a moment to soon according to our calculations. The beach on the East Jetty is expansive these days and on any day I watch “soft groundings” by unsuspecting mariners here on the West side.

If the dredge and its tenders are in your intended direction, you need to hail them on the VHF radio to get instructions for passing. Things are not always as they seem! Very often there are pipes and cables submerged around the operation. So don’t just assume. Contact them. It’s good radio practice!

Here is the official Coast Guard Notice to Mariners: Manson Construction will be performing continuous dredging operations of Channel Islands Harbor from 06 Dec, until 21 Jan. The hydraulic dredge HR MORRIS, dredge tenders PUP and CUB, and derrick barges FREYA and RENEGADE will be on site and monitoring VHF-FM Chan. 13 and 67. Mariners are requested to use extreme caution and contact the dredge HR MORRIS for passing instructions. For more details or comments contact Frank Bechtolt at 562-762-5367, Dredge Captain Fred Franks at 562-762-5396, or dredge HR MORRIS at 562-762-5259
