Mallorca Sailing Flotilla A Success !

groupsm.jpgThe first two weeks of June were spent in Spain ! The highlight of that incredible experience was our one week sailing flotilla charter around the island of Mallorca, which lies about 150 miles off the coast of Spain. We had four boats total which was very manageable. The trip met and exceeded the expectations of all. Palma is a vibrant, exciting city full of history. The coast is pure Med with many marinas, beaches, ports and harbors to explore. We anchored every night in some of the most unforgettable spots you could imagine.

Night one found us in the medieval port of D’Andratx which also began our dinner ritual. We only ate dinner two nights on board. The rest of the time, we found one incredible seafood extravaganza after another. Usually the setting was under a canopy, waterside. I think the restaurants grab a building so they can have a kitchen and place their waterside dining canopies out. Because that is where the dining action is at. It gets dark around 11pm in the Summer there so the dining event really is in a class of its own ! The second night found us in this tiny keyhole harbor called Cala Portals Vells. It was filled to capacity during the day, but we nearly had the place to ourselves to anchor overnight. It was a little spooky because the wind ran around in circles. Night 3 found us anchored behind a rock just outside the marina for the town of Colonia de St Jordi. The market was like the most incredible European deli you ever went to. Night 4 found us in Puerto Petro, a picture postcard mediterranean harbor. We had intended to go much further up the coast but had spent the last two days clawing our way up the coast with the wind on our nose. But we really were more interested in having some great sailing, which we did, than making mileage - which is the case with cruising in a sailboat. The next night found us behind Islet Montana, perhaps the most idyllic anchorage of the trip with a deserted island guarding us from the ocean swell and a miles long white sand beach against the coast. Finally, ,we found our way back to Palma and spent the last night there as we had to be off the boats early the next day.
