Nina Arrives at Channel Islands Harbor

Published by at 12:14 am under Sailing

Local nautical buffs can revel in the latest tall ship visitor to Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor. The Nina is docked here now through December 14th before heading down to Long Beach for the Holidays. It’s not the original 1492 Nina. But it is an authentic replica. In fact it is the most authentic tall ship I have ever seen.

SV Nina at Channel Islands Harbor

The vessel, known as a Caravel was built in Brazil for the Columbus Foundation by craftsmen who have been building wooden ships for centuries. She launched in December of 1991 in time to be used in the Ridley Scott directed film, 1492.

The Nina\'s Captain Kyle

Captain Kyle has been the Captain of Nina for the past four years living an idyllic adventurers life. 2008 has been spent traveling up and down the West coast from Canada where she was part of the Tall Ships Festival up there this past Summer to Panama where she will be once again come next March.

Authentic wooden tackle on SV Nina

This massive wooden block is about 1 foot wide by 2 feet tall ! That line going through it is easily larger than an inch. The only modern conveniences aboard are a head, propane stove, diesel engine, pipe berths and an electronic chart plotter. Oh, and they dont have to carry livestock in the hold anymore to stay alive !

If you are in Southern California this is a must see now till the 14th in Oxnard, then through the holidays in Long Beach, Oceanside at the end of January, San Diego mid February, or you can make a vacation of it and see her in Acapulco the beginning of March.
