January and early February sailing conditions out of Channel Islands Harbor kicked our sailing season into high gear. There has been an inordinate amount of warm days with gentle winds. In fact, January for the most part, was warmer than July!
The real test of these statements though is the Membership roster at our sailing club here in Oxnard. We have been adding Members at a fast pace ever since Thanksgiving. While I attribute this somewhat to our national recession beginning to abate during the same period, our phones and email box are busier when the weather is nice than when it is not, no matter what time of year it is.

It seems like nearly a lifetime ago when, in 2007, the Swiss boat, Alinghi, defeated Emirates New Zealand in the 33rd running of the America’s Cup at Valencia, Spain. For nearly two years after that, the challenge shifted to the courts, where it was decided in the Spring of 2009 that Oracle could challenge Alinghi for the 33rd Cup. Last February, in a best of three-race series last February, Oracle’s powerful trimaran defeated Alinghi’s massive catamaran. Oracle was declared the winner of AC33! Between then and now, Oracle had to choose what kind of boat would be raced and where it would occur for the 34th edition. In the final hours of 2010, the city of San Francisco edged out Newport, RI as the venue for AC34.
One of the challenges in going forward was to create something exciting to match the history of the oldest trophy in the world of sport. For nearly two decades, the
Cup had been challenged with what is known as IACC yachts; highly technical sailing craft that unfortunately had become, well, boring to watch for spectators. In those two decades many technological advancements had other yacht races creating more excitement for spectators. So it was time for an overhaul. Another challenge to overcome was the cost to mount a challenge. Much of the cost revolved around the cost to build an AC yacht. Larry Ellison and his Oracle team have decided on a 72 foot catamaran for AC34. It remains to be seen if this radical departure away from the venerable monohull design will hold. But as of today, several teams have already signed up and several more are scurrying about to gain sponsors capable of mounting the challenge.
The America’s Cup is fraught with drama for more than a hundred years and I could go on and on with the comings and goings of each every turn in the plot. But here is where we are at this point:
