Profligate Makes a Port of Call Here
With tall ships Tole Mour and Talofa both in port here, perhaps changing out crews, I also saw a large catamaran come into our fair harbor the other day. When riding my bike last night on my regular tour, I found Profligate tied up to the PCYC visitor dock! It’s the first time I’ve seen her here.
She is a handsome, custom built, 60 footer, that was constructed in Long Beach and launched in 1997. What makes her “special” to us is her ownership; by the Publisher of our West Coast (and global) sailing rag, Latitude 38. Every time I begin to disagree with what Lat38 has to say, I think of this boat and the thousands of miles she has sailed which causes me to pause.
Even though the cat and her owner are based in San Francisco it is not rare to spot her in Southern California. She usually takes part in the Santa Barbara to King Harbor race and can be seen moored off of Catalina in the early fall. She then becomes the mothership for the legendary Baja Ha-Ha cruising rally from San Diego to Cabo. Until the owner bought another cat to place in the Caribbean, she would make the long journey to and from there annually. We actually chartered Ti Profligate, a 2000 Leopard 45, from BVI Yacht Charters a couple years back. The little sister of this boat performed excellent and we hear the owners spend the better part of the winter on her in and around St Barths.
