Sailing Photo Requires Careful Planning
It’s quite possible that this is the luckiest photo I’ve ever taken in 35 years of amature photography spanning probably 30,000 pictures taken. I was walking down the beach just the other evening at sunset. Walking the beach at sunrise or sunset are my favorite times of day and I don’t always bring my camera. But there I was walking along. The sailboat was easily 4 miles out to sea. It was really just a speck without the big lens. But I could see an intersection was approaching. Would the boat cross the path before the sun set or not? That was the question.

Furtunately, everything worked out and I had time to get three shots. The middle one framed the boat directly in the middle of the sun…and…bingo ! Sailing photography requires a good long lens, steady hand and just being plain lucky sometimes !

Hey Chris,
What an awesome shot!!! That view is what I experienced with the McKinney’s on our sunset/moonlight sail last Wednesday evening.
That is wild. I have never seen a picture quite like it. What a life you have.
