Sailors Flashback

Published by sailtimeci at 10:53 pm under Random Thawt

When I was growing up, I think I was 14, I had a good friend who’s family raced Thistles. I recall to this day, when his brother turned 16 and got a birthday surprise from his grandfather. It was a crate in the garage that contained a brand new completely disassembled MG TD. Well, it could have been a TC but I am pretty darn sure it was a TD.

Every time I see one of these beauties, like I did today, on my harbor bike ride past a car show, I think of that day. Its very possible, the car was a 1948 like this one and the year was 1968. And here we are in 2008; forty years later. I lost touch with the family when I left the old hometown for college and the rest of life, but hooked back up with Larry Rosenfeld a few years ago via the wonders of the internet and some spare time to enjoy it. I forgot to ask him, though, if he still had the car. maybe he will drop by and let us know :-) Last I heard from him he was on his way to Yokohama from San Francisco as Navigator on Geronimo, one of the fastest catamarans in the world. It appears he is building a new catamaran to go after those records he participated in on Geronimo !

Hey Chris, Great to hear from you again! I still love seeing those beautiful cars. It was a 1949 MG TC. 54 HP and could drive on the highway at 86mph! The tires were so skinny that they would go through most any snowstorm. I had to carry tons of spare parts in the back to fix the car when it broke down on the side of the road sometimes (like rebuilding the engine at night in on side of the Mass Pike when all the rod bearings blew at once). AS you probably remember, since you helped work on the car over the 3 years it took to put it all back together, it was the neighborhood project and my Uncle’s idea of how to keep us all off the streets and out of trouble:) I took it to college and drove it for 2 years back and forth from Cleveland to Boston, down to Atlanta and all over the east coast. What a wonderful car.

But I got into 505s and needed some money and more reliable and faster transport to drive all over the country to 505 regattas. So I traded the ole MG for a 505 and a Triumph GT6+. From then on, sailing took over my life as it has yours too!

Thanks for the note and look forward to catching up sometime soon. My son, Max just moved to LA to start a career in film editing, so I”ll be out there more frequently, I’m sure.

    Sail Fast,

    Larry
