Santa Ana Winds Attack Southern California Sailors
When the Santa Ana wind died down enough for a moment, to venture outside today, I grabbed my handy wind meter and stuck it out to the East and caught this lull. Yup, thats 30 knots. We have easily been buffeted here at the Oxnard Harbor since 4am with winds in the upper 40 knot range. When it got light I went down to the boats to make sure they were all still tied up. I doubled up on the spring lines that protects the boats from East winds.

If you notice the color of the sky…in living color it is actually a dark brown/orange. While the fires in Malibu are pretty close - about 25 miles to the South, we have a less celebrity oriented fire in our Eastern County and the wind is picking it up and laying the smoke down, right here. You can hardly breathe outside. And the time it took to snap the picture had my eyes completely crusted over and my mouth full of grit.
We are hoping for the best from this event but given the prediction that this is going to last for a few days does not bode well for Malibu and other areas either ablaze already or prone to fire. As I write this it is 2:20 pm and nearly dark out now with just an orange glow. The radio reports fires occuring from Ventura where I am all the way to the Mexico border…
