Sea Lions Around the Channel Islands

Published by sailtimeci at 4:05 am under Sailing

In some parts of California, the Sea Lions have taken over. Notably, I have friends in Monterey and Newport Beach who report that they can become a problem with boats in particular. Apparently, we resemble a good buoy for rest and relaxation. Fortunately, here in the Channel Islands Harbor, we dont have much going on. In fact, if anything, it seems like there are far fewer sea lions in the harbor now than there was five years ago.

Alot of sea life is having its challenges here along the Southern California coast this Spring. We have had an ongoing red tide for quite a while. This is a bloom of toxic algae which of course passes down the food chain causing sickness in birds and sea lions especially.

A group of SailTime sailors was out the other day in light wind not far from shore. While moving along under sail at a slow pace they spotted this sea lion who swam up and flopped himself on the small swimstep of the boat. He stayed a little while and then hopped off ! You just never know whats going to happen next out here !
