Tall Ships Have Arrived In Channel Islands Harbor!
Late in this past Thursday’s sun-drenched afternoon, the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain arrived in Ventura County’s Channel Islands Harbor, following their passage north from Oceanside Harbor. Both ships finalized their arrival with single shot cannon salutes, their reports echoing through the harbor. The two, full-scale reproduction tall ships are here as part of an ongoing tour of the West Coast. Both ships will be here until January 23 and will be putting on several Battle Sails as well as multiple Adventure Sails, educational workshops for local students and walk-on tours.
Both ships are operated by the non-profit Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority based out of Aberdeen, Washington, which utilizes these magnificent vessels in the aims of promoting and preserving the maritime histories of the Pacific Coast and the nation as a whole. The Historical Seaport endeavors to provide the public with experiences and activities that center on recreational, ambassadorial, educational and vocational objectives.
Guests are able to purchase tickets for the Battle Sails, where the two ships will engage each other in mock, 18th century style naval combat. Those interested will be able to aid the crew in raising sails and taunt the other ship as the cannons fire blank shots! Adventure Sails will be available for those looking for a more leisurely, family-oriented sail, but you’ll still be able to help the crew if you like. Schedule and ticket information is available here.
You’ll be sure to see some SailTime Channel Islands’ members sailing their Hunter sailboats alongside these amazing ships, as the best way to view them under full sail is to be out on the water yourself!
