Tole Mour Calls at Channel Islands Harbor

Published by at 4:43 am under Sailing

I noticed Tole Mour, a 3-masted top sail schooner tall ship in the harbor. Glad I grabbed some pics because she was gone the next day. If I’m not mistaken this ship came here a couple years ago in pretty forlorn shape. But now she seems to have had quite a bit of TLC applied to her and judging from the Guided Discoveries web site she is a busy girl.

Right now she is on a 20-day Summer Camp cruise out of Long Beach which began July 26th. What a fantastic opportunity for young people. She is touted to be the largest sailing school vessel on the West coast! At 156 feet long including the massive bowsprit she is an impressive sight. She was built of steel at Whidby Island in Washington in 1988 for use as a traveling medical care facility to far flung islands of the South Pacific.

    Hi,
I actually happened to be a student aboard the tole when you took this picture. Three weeks on the tole mour is the best three weeks of a lifetime. Learning tall ship sailing , standing watch while watching the bow cut through bioluminescent waters, watching and learning about all sorts of marine life, these things are the makings of a trip on the tole mour. She was almost sold last year due to cost issues, so if you or anyone you know would be interested on sailing on her as a school group or as a camper next summer, contact guided discoveries. You can also contact me if you’d like an anecdotal account my own experience.

    Hi Laura,
Thanks for sharing your experience on Tole Mour. You will remember it forever! Hopefully someone will read this as well and help the beautiful tall ship along on her way.

Hi my name is Keoni, and I just looked up the Tole Mour and I also am a sailor on board the Tole as a student crew I second the comment from my shipmate Laura and I just wanted to say she is the best thing that happened to me. The Tole leaves Long Beach then it journeys to Catalina then Santa Barbra island San Miguel, San Clemente, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Annacapa, pretty much all of the Channel Islands and 1 1/2 weeks into the trip Oxnard then we go out to Cortez Banks then end back at Longbeach after 3 weeks

P.S I will check back for an questons

The Tole is a beautiful ship with a great crew and a once in a lifetime experience for young people to sail and experience all that the S. Cal coast has to offer. I have been taking groups of students on her for ten years now and it is the highlight of my year as a teacher. I have students tell me it is the single best experience of their lives and that it profoundly changes them. I am the luckiest teacher in the world thanks to the staff and crew at Guided Discoveries. So if you want to truly enrich someones life help keep this vessel going and send your kids on an expedition. I am always looking for additional chaperones so feel free to contact me in Manhattan Beach at hcoller@mbusd.org. thanks.
