Transpac 07 Sailing Race Departs Long Beach Next Week

Published by sailtimeci at 9:48 pm under Sailing

There are 74 entries for the third largest fleet ever, in this year’s edition of the Transpacific Yacht Race from Long Beach to Honolulu. The race begins with starts on July 9, 12 and 15 with slowest rated boats first. On the day of each start there will be much fanfare and cannons, etc at the Queen Mary with starts just off Point Fermin Park. This years race is of particular interest because of the documentary being produced about young sailors participating as crew on Morning Light owned by Roy Disney.

Of special note, Lady Liberty, a Catalina 36, owned by John Wallner of Oxnard is rated as the slowest boat of the fleet. The fastest rated boat, Disney’s “other boat, the 94ft Pyewacket has to give nearly six minutes per mile to Wallner’s boat. That’s 9.4 days over the 2,300-mile course. No doubt, John and crew, hailing from the Fairwinds Yacht Club will depart on July 9, while Pyewacket and the rest of the rockets will depart 6 days later. Judging from the current record of a little more than 6 1/2 days, John is going to have to sail a hell of a race. Go John, Go !

I find it interesting that there is not a Hunter boat among the lot. I also see that ‘Uncontrollable Urge’, a Columbia 30, is among the group. Surely John won’t let ‘Lady Liberty’ be beat by an old boat like that.

Hunter’s aren’t in it because it is a down wind sled ride and their rig prevents them from being great downwind boats is my best assumption Larry. it is hard to believe the Columbia 30 is rated faster than a Catalina 36. You can follow the progress of the race as it unfolds on the web site. Very slow going for the the first fleet.
