Wind is a Fickle Mistress
Wind plays a fairly important role in the sport of sailing. Too little and you are dead in the water. Too much and it can quickly become a very challenging situation. My days are spent pondering the wind. If I get bored with pondering it here, then I go over to Majorca and Valencia where I will be in about a month. As that date approaches I will begin to spend most of my days trying to figure out what kind of wind and weather we will be handed on our adventure to the Med. Im not as concerned as when I plan trips to the Caribbean. I tend to go there on the fringes of hurricane season. Been lucky so far…
No matter what the wind is doing in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, it is one of the most perfect cruising destinations I have been to. Thats the Bitter End Yacht Club to the right.
Around these parts its been blowin and blowin for weeks on end.. Way too much !@#$ Late Winter storms. As long as the wind is consistent, i dont mind it much up to 25 knots or so. But when it’s gusty it’s so hard on the equipment it gives me the creeps. Sailboats from 25-35 feet generally like the 12-20 knot range. Mr Beaufort came up with a scale. 8 knots is a pretty narrow band. How often you get it depends on where you live. Here, most of the time, you can set your clock by the wind velocity. it’s calm when you wake up. At about 11am the leaves just begin to rustle. At 2pm ole mother nature turns it up another notch (and sometimes 2 or 3) till sundown. The wind has really been messing with The Louis Vuitton series in Valencia. It has basically taken the week off during the first week of racing. Hopefully, the Newport to Ensenada Race will fair better but it doesnt look too promising.
