SailTime Channel Islands Sailing Newsletter - December 2008

Seasons Greetings!

As we prepare to say "Au Revoir" to 2008 we look forward with hopeful anticipation at a new year. This past year has been full of challenges to be sure. But with sailing as an outlet and passion in our lives, nothing is insurmountable. We feel very lucky to have met the people we have been able to introduce to this sport/lifestyle and value even more the continuing friendships we have created as a byproduct of this unique business. At this time, I redevote myself to making SailTime Channel Islands the best and most affordable means of getting on the water in this part of Southern California and encourage you to introduce more friends and acquaintances to our program and the wonderful experience that is being at sea in the Santa Barbara Channel. While most SailTime Members around the country pay nearly twice as much for only half a year of sailing, we here, enjoy a year around experience that makes most sailors around the world envious. Take advantage of the great sailing winter time has to offer!

Note - Chris will be leading a group of Texas sailors on an N2C trip in the BVI, December 12-21. But Colin and Captain Dan will be available if you have any problems or needs. Call Colin first at 805/407-9836 or Capt Dan at 805/750-7828 if you need a hand.

NOTICES

Parade of Lights - A huge undertaking is underway on Bodacious to present an incredible holiday display capable of winning a trophy and guaranteed to be a highlight event of the year for members. Space if filling up fast for the parade and festivities. Bodacious Member, Larry Pruitt is heading up the decorating committee and Imagine Member, our "Dock Commodore" is taking your reservations for seats and coordinating dock particulars.

Whale Season - Now through the Spring is the height of our whale watching season that culminates with the mama Greys bringing home the babies in the Spring. The key to seeing these incredible creatures is to be attentive on all points of the compass with the horizon. You are looking for the tell tale spout they produce when they surface. When you spot one, proceed towards the location while staying vigilant. Are they moving down the channel (more than likely in Dec, Jan and Feb) or are they moving North, up the channel (headed home from Mexico in Feb, Mar and April). Unlike the rest of the year, the Grey Whale is on a mission, migrating to Summer or Winter grounds so they tend to be moving as opposed to lollygagging and feeding like we find some whales doing in the Summer months. The late Winter and Spring tend to find them closer to the mainland shore which makes it quite possible to find them more easily. Remember, please give these giants a wide berth and do not harass or chase them too close. I guarantee that with vigilance you can treat yourself and your crew to a spectacular display that will be remembered for a lifetime!

CAPTAIN DAN'S CORNER

Captain Dans Head shouts Avast! Avast Ye Mateys!

November continued to produce mainly mild and benign sailing conditions. While we did have a major Santa Ana event mid month there was a lot of sailing to be had. We take the month of December off with no planned clinics or classes. This leaves me open for some private lesson time if you so desire, January arrives quickly with our annual 5-week, Saturday morning ASA 105 Navigation class which starts January 17th. Now is the time to sign up and reserve your space for this class so I can get the materials ordered. Contact me now for more information. We also have a clinic scheduled for January 11th. We call it Heavy Weather/Spinnaker clinic so that we cover our bases. If we just call it heavy weather, the weather is light and if we just call it Spinnaker, the weather is heavy. Either way, you will have a great time learning new skills to further enhance your sailing experience. So, contact me to reserve your seats as space is very limited.
