SailTime Channel Islands Sailing Newsletter - February 2009
Ahoy!
The first month of the new year is in the can and already it is staying lighter longer as we creep towards Spring. January had a bunch of good sailing albeit light winds. In between we saw two nasty late season Santa Ana's and a welcome bit of rain. There are numerous reports of whale sightings in the Channel and out on the backside of Anacapa.

2/28 - Annual "Opening Day" Party - We have heard from more than half the members who are coming. What about you ? It's time to RSVP to Chris for the Annual Party. Once again we will use the Anacapa Yacht Club and we are planning to offer the soon-to-be famous Bobby's BBQ from 3-7pm. We will recognize Members who became Captains in 2007, award the Member of the Year for 2007 and have a authentici BBQ feast as well as "the slide show" while we welcome in the 2008 sailing "season". We need to get a firm count of who is attending so let me know as soon as you can.
3/6 Chris Cooks at AYC - Be my guest and come on out to experience a Friday Night dinner at the Anacapa Yacht Club. I'm cooking my "famous" Green Chili Chicken Enchilads with all the fixins!
Mar 7 - Full moon Frolix - Get ready to Spring Forward - and join in with other members for an evening sail and dock party. Reserve a crew seat today!
3/14 - Safety at Sea Clinic - This annual refresher is good for new members as well as old salts. Shoot off fire extinguishers, flares and other incendiary devices as well as practice maneuvers and safety strategies at sea. Contact Captain Dan for space.
4/11 - Ventura Lunch Run - This is a clinic with a purpose. Learn how to get in and out of the Ventura Harbor and enjoy hearty victuals! Folks who haven't been into Ventura should contact Dan for space. Other members who have been already can reserve their boat and tag along for a flotilla if there is enough interest.
June 7 to 16, 2009 - THIS IS THE VERY LAST CALL FOR RESERVATIONS - Captains Cruise in the Sea of Abaco - If you have already done the BVI, join us for the 3rd annual Captains Cruise when we will discover one of the great barrier reefs in the world, found in the Bahamas. This will also be our first experience using The Moorings charter company which offers a large fleet of catamarans. Three boats are already booked up with a total of five being allowed. Contact Chris for more info.
NOTICES
Please be careful with the Dodger Glass. The covers have some metal edges on the closures which we think are what is causing the scratches. The view you save may be your own! We have seen an uptick in scratches and just remind you to use care when taking the covers off and putting them back on.
The Dredge is Back! The word is it will be here through the Spring and according to the new Notice to Mariners we've seen, for good reason. The area behind the breakwall and the turning basin of the harbor are shoaling up quickly. So much so, that we want to remind those who did not get caught in last months low-low tide that it has changed around here so much with the opening of the new water in the back of the bay it is now necessary to check tide tables before going for a sail. If you see a -1.0 or less low tide we recommend planning your day around it as you may run aground in the slips or fairways at low tide.
Newport to Ensenada is just around the corner. Do you want to crew in the most famous race of the West Coast this year ? Jerry Roth is willing to lead a team of SailTime Channel Islands Members. Jerry has run the race for decades and says it is a blast not to be missed. February is the month to decide yes or no and solidify the crew. Rainbow is already certified to race but if an Owner of another boat wants to get his certified Jerry would have no problem helping with that as well. Contact Jerry at 805-984-4058 to learn more.

CAPTAIN DAN'S CORNER
Ahoy!
The Winter navigation class (ASA105) is well underway and as such there is no clinic planned in February. But in March we will be conducting our annual Safety at Sea clinic. This is a great clinic for new members and old. We blow off flares and practice safety maneuvers at sea which serves as a good refresher for everyone, including myself. My dance card is pretty sparse this month for lessons so if you or someone in your family is looking to take some lessons the schedule is wide open for you.
