Captain Dan's Corner

Happy New Year Mates !
Anticipation is building for the next ASA 105, Coastal Nav class which begins on Sat
January 14th,

0900 at Anacapa Yacht Club. Bring sharp pencils with good erasers, navigation tools (rolling ruler, speed triangle and dividers). A small calculator is nice and plenty of coffee is essential. Please call to confirm your participation and bring your tuition check to the first class. I am looking forward to graduating a whole new slew of HTN's this Winter, so join in the fun ! Speaking of Henry the Navigator - way to go Dennis ! I really don't think you buying me a ticket to France had anything to do with it. But I urge all members to follow in your footsteps and take me with you wherever you go :-)

This is what a Heavy Weather clinic should look like !

We have a pair of Heavy Weather clinics - one for each boat, this month. This is an excellent way to gain more confidence in dicey conditions. space is limited, so call Chris right now to get your spot. And what do you know, The Friday Frolic returns on Imagine the 13th - Friday the 13th...hmmm, well lets see what we can do with this year's FMFF, last season's most popular "clinic". Friday Frolic will be on Rainbow in Feb, again on Imagine in March and once more before it gets light again, on Rainbow in April. Hey - its one fun way to deal with Winter !!!

Finally, why not hire me to train you and your crew in the fine art of spinnaker flying? Plan a Private Spinnaker Clinic this month and learn how much fun these big sails can be !

Maintenance Notes
The first two weeks of January are the scheduled haul out times for both boats. Rainbow will come out on January 3rd to finally have the legendary wump and thump repaired. This requires pulling the rudder and is expected to take all week. Then on January 8th Imagine will haul out for her mid-program bottom paint and sail reconditioning. She will be out of service the entire week. While both boats are out of the water we will also get to wax the hulls as that is much easier out of the water than in !

ALL CI N2C 6/17-24
It appears that the next Novice 2 Captain graduation flotilla will be an ALL Channel
Islands trip ! If you are planning to attend this event as a graduating Captain, let Chris know immediately. Definitive planning will begin mid month as soon as we know who is confirmed. Don't make air reservations yet. We are in the final stages of planning a side trip option to St Croix for a post flotilla decompression. You may want to consider extending your trip for some land based days on this US Virgin Island or you may also want to visit Puerto Rico before or after the flotilla. When traveling this far, there's no rush to get home ! More info on all of this by mid January. At last count these are the Captains planning on graduating in the BVI: Dreith, Garcia, Mckinney, Akimtsev x 2

Member of the Year Award

Dennis Dreith and his family; wife, Leslie and daughter, Marcella, were presented with the first ever Member of the Year award and perpetual trophy at the first annual Member Holiday Gathering held in early December at the Anacapa Yacht Club. Dennis and family are exemplary members in every sense of the word. They always leave their boat clean, invite others to sail with them and are generally good fun to be around !
