SailTime Channel Islands Sailing Newsletter - January 2009
Happy New Year!
Bye Bye 2008...where, perhaps the only sanity was found while spending time at sea on a sailboat. Thank goodness for the great stress reducer known as sailing! December produced some incredible winter sailing conditions. In between the much needed rain we had those incredibly clear, blue sky days accompanied by flat water conditions only found when the Santa Barbara Channel is no longer used as the desert air conditioner. Sure, it is cooler, all around in the Winter months. But not that cold! In fact, on the ocean you will find winter temps are ruled more by the temperature of the water than general weather conditions. So we tend to bottom out in the mid 50's. In some places of the world that's as warm as it ever is on the water - so no excuses - make plans to get some winter sailing in over the next couple months and it will be spring before you know it.

CAPTAIN DAN'S CORNER
Ahoy!
Did you get on the water in December? One of my favorite parts of being a sailor in California is that we have twelve months of a sailing season. Sure some are better than others but don't be fooled. Sometimes the best is found when you least expect it. I just returned from a 4-day ASA104 out to the islands in between Xmas and New Years and the conditions couldn't have been more perfect. If 104 is in your future lets get some dates set while my calendar is pretty open. Of course, if you haven't completed 105 yet then you need to get signed up for our Winter classroom which starts on Saturday January 17th. I promise you will pass and have fun in so doing. We meet at the Anacapa Yacht Club in the morning which leaves the afternoon free to go for a sail or crew for someone else who is going out. So lets make the most of January and it will be "spring" before you know it. Ive got space available for the Heavy Weather/.Spinnaker Clinic on January 11th aboard Bodacious. No matter what the weather gods throw at us it will be a good learning experience be it heavy weather skills or the fine art of flying a spinnaker - come out out for some big fun! I'm already salivating for Bobby's BBQ extravaganza and everything else that goes along with the Annual Party next month so if I don't see you between now and then make sure you plan to be there.
