SailTime Channel Islands Sailing Newsletter - October 2008
Happy Fall Sailing Season!
September ushered in some of the best sailing conditions of the year. Lets hope October falls in line and acts like its supposed to ! The general drill is that the wind begins to stir at 10am and by 11 you have a nice breeze which gradually increases throughout the day. I'm always amazed at how hard it is to predict exactly what is going on and several members take a moment to call me before heading to the harbor. I'm happy to prognosticate and give current conditions, so feel free to join those who do.

UPCOMING EVENTS
October 9-12 - SailTime Rendezvous at Two Harbors on Catalina - SailTime sailors from Southern California will converge on Catalina for a get together at the same time as the annual Lattitudes and Attitudes Party.
October 18 - Frolic Forth! - This month the Frolic is joining up with the H&S SantaCruzers for a lunch run to Frenchy's on Anacapa. So while it will be light out, frolicers shall frolic nonetheless! Contact Dwight Landis for a seat on a boat at: dalandis[@]atec-online.com (remove [ ])
11/8-15 - BVI N2C - Our annual pilgrimage to sailing mecca where we will graduate two Captains this time.
11/16 - Anacapa Clinic - Our clinic season kicks off with our popular day long course. $50 per person. A required clinic for those who have not gone to the island yet and a great refresher for those who have! Meet at 1421 at 10am - Contact Capt Dan for space. A seat or two remains open as of this writing.
12/13 - Annual Parade of Lights - The frolicers plan to decorate one of the boats and enter into the parade. However, this takes a level of volunteerism to make it happen. So contact our Dock Commodore, Dwight Landis if you are interested in being part of it.
6/7-6/16/09 - Captains Cruise in the Sea of Abaco - If you have already done the BVI, join us for the 3rd annual Captains Cruise when we will discover one of the great barrier reefs in the world, found in the Bahamas. This will also be our first experience using The Moorings charter company which offers a large fleet of catamarans. Three boats are already booked up with a total of five being allowed. Contact Chris for more info. Registration is set to close 9/1.
NOTICES
Dredging is underway - which is great! But it also means you need to be aware. Slow down and follow the rules. They run day and night when they are fully operational. If you hear a loud blast of sound with five short blasts they are announdingi some sort of danger - like they are moving or impeding the channel. Vessels are required to adhere to USCG Rule 34 - All vessels in a meeting, crossing or overtaking situation, must signal their intent and obtain passing instructions by sound or radio. Call dredge "HR Morris" on VHF 16
Colin asks that you please remember to use a squeegee on ALL clear surfaces when you rinse them. The water spotting on them is especially hard to remove.

CAPTAIN DAN'S CORNER
Ahoy Mates!
Where the heck did September go ? I began the month with a wonderful cruise up to San Miguel with my son and Dennis Dreith. We circumnavigated the island in fairly quiet seas for up that way and saw a ton of whales and other creatures of the ocean along the way. I bookended the month with the "Crash Course" ASA 105 which really went quite well, all things considered. It was a good class size and the great news for the graduates is they wont be doing it in January !
This is a great time of year for lessons as well as 104 and/or 106 trips. I have a few openings in my dance card, so take advantage of what looks like a good long range forecast for the month.
Ive got a couple of seats left on our inaugural clinic of this season, the most popular Anacapa trip. So if you want to go with us November 16th, let me know. If you have not been yet, it qualifies you to do it on your own. If you have already, well, heck, come along anyway. Its great fun !
