SailTime Channel Islands Sailing Newsletter - September 2008

Ahoy Mateys!

August provided ideal conditions albeit a little light on the wind side. But on the whole, very hard to complain. We have yet to really see late Summer conditions with blustery afternoons. So don't get complacent with your weather watching! September and October provide our notoriously best sailing weather. So, even though it is the "post summer" busy time of year, don't forget to go sailing!

The frolic folks hope you will join them for what has become the best party in the harbor ! This month, they nearly hit the Full Moon when the event takes place on Saturday, September 13th. It's a great way to get to know other members and go out for a fun sunset sail.

UPCOMING EVENTS

9/13 - September Frolic - Contact "Commodore" Dwight Landis for more info and to participate. Dalandis@atec-online.com

October 9-12 - SailTime Rendezvous at Two Harbors on Catalina - SailTime sailors from Southern California will converge on Catalina for a get together at the same time as the annual Lattitudes and Attitudes Party.

11/8-15 - BVI N2C - Our annual pilgrimage to sailing mecca

11/16 - Anacapa Clinic - Our clinic season kicks off with our popular day long course. $50 per person. A required clinic for those who have not gone to the island yet and a great refresher for those who have! Meet at 1421 at 10am - Contact Capt Dan for space

12/13 - Annual Parade of Lights - There is a move afoot by the frolicers to decorate one of the boats and enter into the parade. However, this takes a level of volunteerism to make it happen. So contact our Dock Commodore, Dwight Landis if you are interested in being part of it.

6/7-6/16/09 - Captains Cruise in the Sea of Abaco - If you have already done the BVI, join us for the 3rd annual Captains Cruise when we will discover one of the great barrier reefs in the world, found in the Bahamas. This will also be our first experience using The Moorings charter company which offers a large fleet of catamarans. Three boats are already booked up with a total of five being allowed. Contact Chris for more info. Registration is set to close 9/1.

NOTICES

Annual Party - We only had about 50% of members vote for when an annual party should be held. Those voting narrowly chose to hold it some other time of year than during the Holidays. With yours truly on the road quite a bit of November and December, this will make life a lot less hectic. We currently plan to offer up an Annual Party with slide show, dinner and fun in the late winter as a kick off to the 2009 sailing season. Stay tuned!

Dredging this Fall - Between Sept 15 and January 15 dredging of the Channel Islands Harbor entrance will take place once again. Be on the lookout and give plenty of space to their activities. They run day and night when they are fully operational. If you hear a loud blast of sound with five short blasts they are announdingi some sort of danger - like they are moving or impeding the channel. Vessels are required to adhere to USCG Rule 34 - All vessels in a meeting, crossing or overtaking situation, must signal their intent and obtain passing instructions by sound or radio. Call dredge "HR Morris" on VHF 16

CAPTAIN DAN'S CORNER

Captain Dans Head shouts Avast! Avast!
July and August were the two busiest months of my sailing career. With very few days off of the water, I can tell you the sailing was great! I hope you got out there and enjoyed it like I did.

We are holding a "Crash Course" ASA 105 on September 18-21. This will be a no holds barred down and dirty marathon for those who just have to get it out of the way. If this is not your cup of grog, we will hold our more leisurely Saturday morning class in January. Contact me for more information about either of these.

I am still waiting to hear from my first 106 victim. If you want to get some advanced training in and another sticker in your book lets plan a date. I have some openings in the next couple months.
